Dobz O’Brien is an artist, independent curator, and Programmes Manager at the National Sculpture Factory, Cork.
In 2016 he co-produced Laura Murphy’s Abacus in the NSF and Clodagh Emoe / Crocosmia The Plurality of Existence in the Infinite Expanse of Space and Time as part of the Cork Midsummer Festival.
Later 2016 he is curating a show called Speculative Fictions with 2 Swedish artists Lina Selander (who represented Sweden at the Venice Biennial 2015) and Emma Hartmann at the Sirius Arts Centre Cobh. And has been selected to show at Tulca 2016 - The Headless City curated by Daniel Jewesbury.
In 2015 he produced 2 major projects at the NSF; Burn Down After Reading a project by artist Taf Hassam; Time Machine an event by Hollie Kearns and Rosie Lynch as part of a new NSF programmatic strand called Im/plants.
He also designed, conceived and produced a multi-screen installation at the NSF in collaboration with the Cork Film Festival screening the Italian film Hand Gestures (2015) as a multi-sensory and experiential form.
Over the last number of years he has curated and produced a number of artwork at the NSF with international artists such as SuperFlex, (Denmark); Phil Collins, (England/Germany); Maddie Leach, (New Zealand) as well as Irish artists, Jess Presley Jones, Anthony Haughey, and Mark Garry.
He was a co-curator of the Cork Caucus project in 2005 with Charles Esche, Annie Fletcher and Fergal Gaynor. Major projects were undertaken by International artists Surasi Kusolwong (Thailand), BikvanderPol (Holland), Maria Eichhorn (Berlin), Paul O’Neill, Static, Phil Collins. While theoretical lectures and workshops were given by Gayatri Chakravorty Spivak, Chantal Mouffe, Sarat Maharaj and Catherine David to mention a few.
He has exhibited both nationally and internationally. At Via Farini, Milan and at “Big Social Game”, Torino Biennale in Italy; Rraum02 and Gasthof in Frankfurt as part of Manifesta 4 to mention a few.
In 2007 he set up, Radio ON, as an artwork where he co-produced, programmed, directed, and curated a fully licensed broadcast Radio station, with full FM bandwidth, running for 5 days.
In 1999 he set up Art/ not art an investigative, educational and interventionist art group, which has also been involved in numerous art events across Europe. Art / not art continues to produce art interventions, curate exhibitions and make new artworks and through its Non Academy program, organise lectures, screenings, reading groups amongst other activities.
He received my Masters Degree in 2007 at NCAD, Dublin and his undergraduate degree in Sculpture at Glasgow School of Art in 2000. He also received his diploma in Fine Art from the Crawford College of Art & Design in 1997.
