Catherine Harty works in a variety of media including painting, photography and video. She holds a Masters in Contemporary Art Theory from NCAD, and Fine Arts Practice from Birmingham School of Art, University of Central England.
Statement
The overall ‘look’ of a lot of my work could be described as ‘amateur’. This is a very deliberate if somewhat precarious strategy. I like the tension created between the ‘professional’ injunction to maximize all possible assets to manufacture as ‘appealing’ a product as possible and actually creating something, which resists this demand. Amateurism is embraced as a critical aesthetic strategy and mode of production.
